KTVL CBS Channel 10 :: News - Medford Teachers Strike -

By Ashley Carrasco / KTVL.COM EAGLE POINT, Ore - "It was heart breaking to have to go through that." That's the voice of Carroll Newcomb. She was one of hundreds of teachers that picketted in Eagle Point in 2012. Newcomb says there is almost no scarier moment in a teacher's career than when it is time to make that vote. "You have to think of the ramifications of your own pay check, other people's pay check; Of the students, of the loss learning time. And whenever you lose momentum in a classroom, you have to somehow kick start that back up," stresses Newcomb. At least 4 days of classes were canceled when educators went on strike. Allen Barber with School District 9 describes the movement as "ugly and tough for everyone." Newcomb could not agree more, adding, "It was a disruption in every body's life because the school in Eagle Point is the focal point of this community or all of the schools in all of our communities." In the midst of division and frustration, there was a glimpse of hope. "We had students that were so glad to see us. We had students out on the line with us also. We had seniors that went in and did their senior projects and we were rejoicing with them," Newcomb continues. If medford teachers strike on February 6, 2014, Newcomb has one final lesson. She wants to remind parents that educators are not doing it to be selfish, they're standing up for their rights. Newcomb says, "We had parents for us and we had parents against us and we appreciated the support from the parents because we knew we were doing what we had to do, but we were still anxious to get back in the classroom."
