Medford Teachers: Get this done!
By Ashley Carrasco / KTVL.COM MEDFORD - Tuesday February 18, 2014, the Medford School District and the Teacher's Union met 2 people at a time in front of a mediator. According to the district, it was waiting on information from the Medford Education Association and leaders for the union say they were waiting for a proposal from the district which has since been presented. If teachers can give a counter package proposal, bargaining is expected to go throughout the night. Both sides agree the strike has taken too much of a toll on the community and the issues need to be resolved.Long recognizes, " There was a lot of activities over the weekend including a rally, honking cars, excellent teachers standing out in the cold holding signs." But he asks, "We're here to bargain, where is MEA team? "
Teachers argue they have been ready since their last bargaining session to continue negotiations. They say they want their educators to be back in the classroom and they feel they are very close to finding a compromise, but they can not do that if both parties are not bargaining.
"We want a 2 year contract. There's about $1 million dollar difference between our deal and the district's offer. That's very easy to get through. We feel confident that the district will negotiate on the language pieces," says a spokesperson with MEA.
Many people are frustrated because it took four days to resume bargaining. Superintendent Phil Long says it is common for Mediators to take a step back in the case when it seems like there are not any breakthroughs. Long says this is done to give both parties time to sit back and think about the offers on the table and hopefully see things a little more clearly.
