Dead pets remain in ruins of burned Oregon mobile homes

Pleasant Hill fire

PLEASANT HILL, Ore. (AP) — Iris Potter says the smell just bowls you over.

She lives next to the site of a July fire that destroyed three homes at mobile home park in Pleasant Hill, Oregon. The carcasses of two cats and two dogs remain, and the stench of decomposition permeates the place.

Last week's stretch of 100-degree weather didn't help.

Potter tells The Register-Guard she has sought permission from the park manager to pour limestone over the remains to speed decomposition, but hasn't heard back.

The fire killed six pets in all and sent one man to the hospital.

Two of the destroyed homes were uninsured, so cleanup has been left to the mobile home park. The Lane Regional Air Protection Agency says the burned structures contain asbestos and need special contractors for disposal.
