Firefighters continue to work on Chetco Bar Fire containment

[AFTERNOON UPDATE: Saturday, Aug. 27, 2017]

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office has expanded the area under a Level 3 Evacuation Order to include areas along Carpenterville Road which lie north of Bosley Butte Road along Summit Ridge and north to Sundown Mountain.

A Level 3 Evacuation (GO!) means residents within this area should leave immediately.

An Level 2 Evacuation Orders has also expanded to all areas lying west of the level 3 Evacuation area.

The Chetco Bar Fire remains at 107,993 acres burned and remains the number one priority fire in the nation.

Here's a break down of what each level means:


EVACUATIONS

There will be a community fire briefing at Brookings-Harbor High School Sunday, Aug. 27 at 6p.m.

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office has expanded the area under a Level 3 Evacuation Order to include areas along Carpenterville Road which lie north of Bosley Butte Road along Summit Ridge and north to Sundown Mountain.

An Level 2 Evacuation Orders has also expanded to all areas lying west of the level 3 Evacuation area.

A Level 1 evacuation (Ready) notice was issued for the the City of Brookings. Curry County Sheriff John Ward has also declared a Level 1 pre-evacuation for unincorporated areas not originally included in any other evacuation notices.

The Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter at Riley Elementary School in Gold Beach on 94350 6th Street. There is no shelter in Brookings.

The shelter provides the following services:

  • Shelter (sleeping are, cots, and blankets)
  • Food (hot meals and snacks)
  • Water and coffee
  • Showers
  • Information updates with the Fire Management Team
  • Information on pet shelter and livestock relocation assistance

CURRENT CONDITIONS

Aerial support Crews are strenghtening and mopping up containment lines on the southewestern corner of the fire.

The structure protection group is installing sprinkler and hosesay systems.

WEATHER

A RED FLAG Warning is in affect for Curry County through Monday.

Fire crews are preparing for upcoming unfavorable weather known as the "Chetco Effect." Fire managers plan to use as many opportunities to use air resources along with ground hand crews and dozers.

SMOKE

Heavy smoke is expected along the coast and highway 101. Smoke will also be seen from Gold Beach and Brookings-Harbor into Northern California reaching unhealthy to very unhealthy.
