New firefighter positions added last year, helps fire district with a spike in fires

The Illinois Valley Fire district was busy over the weekend working to put out fires.

There were three structure fires and two car fires. During one of those days, there were two fires happening at once.

News 10 spoke with Jason Bayless with the Fire District who says right now, there is no telling why these fires happened during the same time frame.

He says things like this happens in waves and all the district can do is be prepared for when it does happen.

Last year, a levy passed giving the fire district funds four new positions.

Bayless says this helped the with all the busy calls over the weekend.

"It allowed us to be able to have someone who was ready to go who could wait for additional personnel to arrive there, or to arrive straight to the scene with the engine and start doing the initial attack," said Bayless.

Rural Metro and Grants Pass Fire helped the fire district out on some of those fires.
