One person injured in Grants Pass arson fire

Grants Pass Department of Public Safety arrested a man suspected of arson fire in Grants Pass on Monday afternoon.

GPSPS emergency units responded to calls of a large fire in a yard on the 1000 block of northeast A Street. The fire had quickly spread to nearby rose bushes, shrubbery, tree, nearby power lines, car, and had begun to threaten nearby homes.

Firefighters assisted by GPDPS Patrol quickly evacuated elderly residents from the primary residence. An elderly 89-year-old woman suffered a bruise hip during the evacuation. She was taken to Two Rivers Medical Center for treatment.

The fire was quickly contained due to the quick response by fire crews.

A witness told officers that they had observed Dean Ruff behaving suspiciously moments before the fire began.

Officers were able to locate and arrest Ruff on arson 1 charges. He was lodged into Josephine County Jail.
