Protecting your animals during mosquito season

As spring approaches, Jackson County Vector Control District wants to remind pet and horse owners to protect their animals against mosquitoes.

Manager and Biologist, Jim Lunders, says there's two big issues with mosquito season.

One of the issues include hart worm. He says there is mosquitoes that can transmit it between dogs and it's important for pet owners to have their dog on a heart worm preventative year round.

"It protects them and it also minimizes the amount of heart worm that's in the environment," Lunders said.

He says horse owners need to make sure their horses are vaccinated and protected against West Nile virus and other mosquito born diseases.

Lunders says vaccines take time to work, so if your horse has not been previously vaccinated, it's going to need the first shot in the next couple of weeks.
