Recreational marijuana won't force too many changes for Siskiyou County Sheriff in 2018

(Mike Marut/KTVL)

Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey has been busting illegal marijuana grows for years.

With recreational marijuana commercialization to be legalized, Lopey says they will see some change, but not too much. The Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors did not approve commercialization of cannabis across the county.

Lopey says the Board wants to see how the Bureau of Cannabis Control handles sales and distribution.

"It's very wise to sit back and see what other counties do and how this this whole new realm of marijuana cultivation, commercialization and expansion takes place," Lopey said.

Lopey says before recreational sales can be legalized in the county, he wants to make sure illegal grows are taken care of first to make sure all operations work within the state and county laws.

Lopey believes it may take at least a year or more before the Board of Supervisors revisits the decision of recreational marijuana sales.
