SOU Preview Weekends admit prospective students on the spot

The third week of January marked another Preview Weekend for prospective students at SOU.

Four Preview Events are held on campus every year, and all include a program called 'Raider on the Spot.'

As part of the program, admissions counselors work with students to give them an immediate admissions decision. It's an option that is currently available at Preview events and during daily campus tours.

One counselor says getting accepted is an exciting moment for incoming freshmen and their families.

"I was a first generation student, so kind of having that certificate saying, 'Congratulations, you've been admitted,' it's a really big deal, especially to the families," said Admission Counselor Arturo Ornesto Jr. "You kind of see the students light up when they get a decision and it goes their way."

Ornesto says 13 students were admitted through the 'Raider on the Spot' program this weekend. He says he's seen as many as 40 students admitted over a weekend, and as few as two or three.

Each Preview Weekend spans two days, and allows prospective students to stay the night in residence halls, take a tour of the campus, meet faculty and eat at the dining hall.

The admissions office says they expect between 400 and 600 people at each event.

The next Preview Weekend will be held February 16th and 17th.
