State representatives introduce bill to end sanctuary cities
Jackson County, Ore. - Representative Sal Esquivel (R-Medford) and Representative Mike Nearman (R-Salem) introduced a bill to the 2017 regular session that would effectively end sanctuary cities.
The bill would make sure all cities across the state would abide by federal laws regarding immigrants. It also would make sure cities and counties cannot allow "the release of an individual in the custody of ... law enforcement ... if the federal government has issued a civil immigration detainer request for the individual."
Esquivel says lawmakers have already told him the bill will not pass. He says he's disappointed that some fellow lawmakers would allow cities and counties to not follow federal laws strictly.
