Gang Assessment released
By Dave De Rurange/KTVL.com
MEDFORD, Ore -- A new report shows how concerned Jackson County is about gang activity. It was released Wednesday morning.
After two years of surveying, the Jackson County Gang Task Force now has a snapshot of gang perception in the county. Facilitator Joe Ferguson said the Gang Assessment may be the first of its kind in Oregon.
The assessment is comprised of more than 4,500 responses and interviews on gang activity in Jackson County.
"I don't think it's one easy answer. I think it's a gammet of prevention, intervention and supression." Deputy Director of Jackson County Juvenile Services Joe Ferguson said.
Jackson County parents, business leaders and four active gang members participated in the assessment.
Phil Ortega works with kids in Eagle Point and White City. He said he's happy students were included in the Gang Assessment.
"And their voice is heard today," Ortega said, "If we don't do something about it, then those numbers might grow."
The assessment shows gang activity as one of top three concerns of Jackson County. The Gang Task Force wants people to take action by attending two community forums in April. One forum will be on April 22 at Central Medford High School. The other forum will be at White Mountain Middle School on April 24. Gang Task Force leaders say they will present more of the details of the Gang Assessment at those forums
