Colorado and pot 6 months later
COLORADO -- It's been six months since Colorado approved the sale of marijuana for recreational use.
Strawberry Diesel is one of the most popular strains of marijuana on the market right now in Colorado.
The name relates to how it smells -- A combination of strawberry fields and diesel gas.
It is popular because it is supposed to give you a euphoric high. With many saying it "feels like sunshine" when you smoke it.
It is one of hundreds, possibly thousands, of marijuana strains that have come to market since it became legal to sell pot for recreational use.
It has been more than six months since Colorado passed legislation, launching the "experiment." And pot shop owners say business is still booming.
One owner says he sees about 10,000 customers a month with about 20 percent of his customers coming from out of state.
It makes you wonder how many pot users are getting high and then hitting the road. Colorado State Patrol just started to keep track of marijuana-specific driving under the influence citations.
Month-to-month, pot DUIs compose about 10 to 15 percent of all DUI citations.
They are still seeing more people driving under the influence of alcohol.
But police are giving out a lot of tickets to people getting high in public, which is still against Colorado law.
More than 350 people have been cited in Denver alone this year. The fine is typically $135.
Another pot problem the state has encountered come in the form of marijuana edibles. The look can be deceiving. It a marijuana-infused candy bar can be small, but potent, containing 100 milligrams of THC, marijuana's psychoactive ingredient.
It is the equivalent of 10-servings or doses of marijuana, which can cause problems when people eat too much of it.
Overall, a lot of Coloradans think legalizing marijuana has been a good thing, especially when it comes to the tax money.
The state has collected more than $11 million in marijuana taxes.
Other states will continue to watch Colorado to see if this is the beginning of the end of pot prohibition.
For now, cannabis enthusiasts in Colorado will be stocking up on Strawberry Diesel.
