ASHLAND, Ore -- The City of Ashland wants the 12 acres adjacent the Ashland Gun Club.
According to a new environmental study the land is contaminated with lead from the gun club. The waste seeping into the ground is from stray shot-gun shells.
Right now, James Miller owns the property. The city says it plans to make a deal with Miller to clean up the property and expand the gun club.
Exchanging his 12 acres with four of the city's and paying him $65,000.
To do this the city needs to get a full appraisal that meets State standards and then get the city council to pass the motion.
Public works hopes to get it all done by October and clean the property up soon after.
The range no longer allows lead materials on the property.
Miller's 12 acres also has water rights on it, which the city will be able to use, if the exchange goes through.
