When Nathan Shinn, 24, and Alex Machado, 22, spotted a bear near their position one of the hunters took the shot.
The hunters followed the bear for nearly a mile when it laid down in a meadow.
The men decided to approach the animal from behind to check on its condition, the but bear woke up and grabbed Machado.
The bear began biting Machado all along the right side of his body, then when it pulled the man into a bear hug the two rolled down a 50 foot drop off.
While Machado and the bear fell, Shinn was able to follow them and made it down to shoot the animal in the head killing it.
After Shinn went to higher ground to call 911 for help, Machado walked off in a different direction.
As deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office responded a Lieutenant found Machado walking along small road off of Elk Creek Road.
While Machado was flown to Rogue Valley Medical center to be treated for his bite wounds, deputies launched a search for his fellow hunter Shinn. The man was found after about an hour of searching.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office asks that anyone who might be out hunting to take great care when approaching an animal and be prepared to shoot again if it is not dead.
