Medford Police and the Department of Human Services checked on a child living in a hotel room in the 700 block of North Riverside on Dec. 4.
While making contact with the 5-year-old child's mother, the officer saw drug paraphernalia, needles, scales and a counterfeit $20 bill, according to a press release from the Medford-Area Drug Gang Enforcement task force.
The officer then got a search warrant. Police then searched the room and found 7 grams of heroin, 10 grams of methamphetamine, counterfeit bills, 399 grams of marijuana, a 9mm handgun and $2,278.
Police say the drug paraphernalia was left out and meant the child had access to the drugs and uncapped needles.
Police arrested Ashley Marie Auger, 25, on the suspicion of child neglect, endangering the welfare of a minor, first-degree forgery, unlawful possession of heroin, unlawful delivery of heroin, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, unlawful delivery of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful delivery marijuana.
A MADGE investigator continued to look into the case and identified a second suspect -- Abdul Hackim, 29. Police found Hackim in the 1000 block of Court Street at another hotel on Dec. 15.
At the time, the suspect allegedly had a 9mm handgun that was linked to a Grants Pass burglary, according to the press release. Police say Hackim is a convicted felon.
Hackim did have a backpack and duffle bag in the room when police contacted him. Police seized the bags and secured a search warrant.
Once they had the warrant, they searched the bags and found methamphetamine, heroin and additional evidence linking Hackim to the stolen handgun.
Hackim was arrested on the suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful delivery of heroin, unlawful manufacture of heroin, unlawful possession of heroin, unlawful delivery of methamphetamine, unlawful manufacture of methamphetamine and unlawful of possession of methamphetamine.
