ASHLAND. Ore.- Some drivers on I-5 at Siskiyou Summit drove on the shoulder today to pass backed-up traffic, while others who had planned on delays, took it slow.
Some semi trucks this morning took the shoulder lane on the Siskiyou Pass.
Senior Trooper, Bill Matson, with Oregon State Police says, though this is common practice for truckers in an attempt to not slow other drivers behind them down, it is against the law.
Big rigs were not the only ones breaking this law on the summit today.
Interstate 5 was backed up just before noon today and some drivers decided to take the shoulder, creating a third lane.
A family driving south from Woodburn to Salinas, was trying to do the complete opposite.
The Nava family, keeping up daily with weather and road conditions online, over the phone and from friends who drove down Friday, postponed its trip until early Saturday morning to avoid bad weather.
Joshua Nava says, so far, he only saw bad winter conditions on the road this morning around 10 a.m. just before Grants Pass.
Joshua Nava says he made sure to plan ahead to assure his family would be ready for anything it may face, like having to chain up.
"Before, I just made sure that one of the guys showed me again and checked it out and then of course, my wife YouTubed the way to put 'em on, so we got a lot of practice, a little bit of you know, understanding how to put them on," says Nava.
He adds, "We have a safety kit that we actually had gotten some time ago. It has your basic jumper cables, flash light, flares and other tools. I actually added a few other tools to it."
Nava says, weather was not really an issue for them.
The family did have some car travels, but Nava says he is not worried about not making it to Salinas in time for Christmas, because the Navas left with plenty of time.
When their car began to give them trouble, they took the next exit of I-5, exit six, and were pleasantly surprised when they ran into Callahan's Lodge.
They waited at the lodge for a mechanic, and depending on the news, they may be on their way today, or spend the night at the lodge and head out again tomorrow.
