The bus driver survived the crash but investigators have not be able to speak to this person because of severity of injuries and medical care.
Oregon State troopers say the bus was traveling west on I-84 when it lost control on the snow- and ice-covered lanes near milepost 227. Police say the bus crashed through a guardrail and plummeted down an embankment a few hundred feet before coming to a rest.
First responders report the charter bus was carrying at least 40 people. State police have yet to release information regarding the charter bus company but it was on it's way to British Columbia from Las Vegas.
Approximately 20 people have been transported to an area hospital and additional people with injuires are being prepared for transport according to Oregon State Police. Many patients had to be life flighted to secondary hospital locations.
Personnel trained for rope rescues are at the scene, helping to bring people from the crash scene back to the highway.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies in the Umatilla and Union county areas have responded to the scene.
Westbound Interstate-84 lanes are closed at the La Grande area.
This bus crash is at least the second fatal crash on Interstate 84 in northeast Oregon Sunday morning. Authorities cited icy conditions during both accidents.
