NEAR RUCH, Ore. -- Thanks to working smoke alarms, two people made it out of their home safely during a fire Monday night.
It happened at about 10:30 p.m. at a home on the 7000 block of Highway 238 near Ruch.
Applegate Valley Fire District No. 9 Operations Chief Chris Wolfard says the homeowner called 9-1-1 after noticing smoke from the second floor of the home.
When crews arrived, Wolfard says there were flames coming out of the windows on the second story. Firefighters knocked down the flames in about 45 minutes, Wolfard said.
While there was significant damage on the upstairs area of the home, crews were able to save some of the family's belongings.
Wolfard says this fire is a reminder to check your smoke alarms.
"Working smoke alarms were key to this," Wolfard said. "If the home owners weren't awake and active they might have slept through it."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, Wolfard says it most likely started in the chimney. He wants to warn people to clean their chimneys this time of year.
