ASHLAND, Ore.-Ashland School District said the four Ashland High School football players accused of attempted sexual penetration during a summer camp hazing incident do not present any danger to other students.
Ashland Police first began investigating the case this summer after the football camp at Linfield College in late June.
This week, they released that five Ashland High School sophomores were subjected to attempted sexual penetration.
Police said four Ashland High School suspects and another from Lithia High School, are charged with coercion. Three of the Ashland High students are also charged with conspiracy to commit unlawful sexual penetration.
The Lithia Springs High School student who is a member of the Ashland football team, is facing an additional charge of unlawful sexual penetration because police said he attempted the act.
Ashland High School started its own investigation into the hazing this summer, but police asked them to step back so they could conduct their own investigation.
Ashland School District superintendent, Juli Di Chiro, said, had school administrators gone further and realized the case was not one of abuse, but rather, a criminal case, administrators would have acted differently.
Di Chiro said administrators are now aware of the accusations against the juveniles, but said they are not concerned about the safety of the victims or other students.
Di Chiro said that police have assured Ashland High administrators that the attempted sexual assault was part of a behavioral pattern.
Di Chiro said the Ashland High suspects do not "present any danger at this point."
The district does not want to interfere with the accused students' educations, so it will wait until it receives a police report to decide whether or not the students should be removed from the football program or school.
Di Chiro said all students involved "are being monitored very closely" to ensure no one is undergoing any danger or harassment.
