Medford Police began investigating the case in November when the teen's parents contacted them, according to a press release from the Medford Police Department. The parents had discovered the 16-year-old had engaged in consensual sex with various adults he had met online.
Investigators found that the boy met about 10 men through Craigslist and various smart phone applications. The boy had sex with these men -- sometimes on multiple occasions. Police say the locations varied, but most of the sexual acts occurred at the suspects' homes.
Under Oregon law, it is illegal for adults to have sexual contact, intercourse or deviate sexual intercourse with people who are under the age of 18.
Detectives identified eight men who allegedly engaged in deviate sexual intercourse or sexual contact with the teen.
On Wednesday, police arrested five of the eight suspects: Dameon Knapp, 30, of Medford; Kristopher Brooke Mix, 24, Phoenix; Paul John Garcia, 50, Grants Pass; James Douglas Coey, 24, of Medford; and Tobias Kenneth Hoffline, 25, of Medford.
The men were arrested on the suspicion of sex abuse and contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor.
Police believe the remaining three suspects are out of the area and are seeking arrest warrants.
