MEDFORD, Ore. -- The American Red Cross currently has an urgent need for types O negative and B negative blood donations.
Distributions of types O negative and B negative to hospitals are out numbering donations, which has been creating an urgent need in the Pacific Northwest.
"Recently a hospital served by the American Red Cross ordered 40 type O negative red cells for just one patient undergoing a hysterectomy. Thanks to the donors that gave in the days and weeks before, all of the blood products were available for this patient," said Christina Dunlap, American Red Cross Territory Representative
Right now, the Red Cross has 72 units of O negative and B negative blood in the Pacific Northwest, which is all of Oregon and southwest Washington.
"Friday it was 72 units in the Pacific Northwest and we supply 80 hospitals, that's less than one unit per hospital. Most people don't get one unit of blood when they get a blood transfusion," said Dunlap.
