GRANTS PASS, Ore.-All college and university employees are required to report child abuse since the start of 2013 as stated in House Bill 4016.
The law does not apply to school volunteers, contractors and students not employed by their college or university.
Reports are to be made to the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) or law enforcement.
Margaret Bradford, Director of Marketing and Recruitment at Rogue Community College (RCC) said those affected by the law are required to report abuse at all times. "This is a 24-hour, seven-day-week responsibility. It doesn't matter whether you're at work or at home. If you're a community college employee and you see a suspected case of child abuse, you are required to report it," said Bradford.
Bradford added, RCC has provided its employees with links to an online training by DHS and is preparing an in-person training for new employees.
She said, DHS does not require RCC to ensure employees complete the training, but only to provide them with the resources to understand the new law.
Employees who do not comply with H.B. 4016, according to Bradford, will have committed a Class A criminal violation and will be subject to a $2,000 penalty.
Violators could also be sued for damages in civil court.
