The accident happened around 8:30 p.m. Sunday on Table Rock Road near East Gregory Road in Central Point, according to a press release from the Jackson County Sheriff's office.
A 1998 gray Honda Civic was heading north on Table Rock Road; the driver was going between 45 and 50 miles per hour.
The driver had just passed the Whiskey River Bar when a male pedestrian -- identified as 54-year-old Frank Charlton -- stepped into the northbound lane and attempted to cross Table Rock Road, according to the press release.
Police say the driver slammed on his brakes and attempted to swerve but hit the pedestrian, throwing him into the southbound lane.
The driver stopped his vehicle, turned on his hazard lights and called 911. Police say the driver attempted to stop traffic.
Within a few seconds, Charlton was hit by a second vehicle. A 2012 white Ford Focus was heading south on Table Rock Road. The driver saw a large object lying in the road and slammed on his brakes, according to the press release.
However, the driver was unable to stop in time and struck the pedestrian.
Police say Charlton was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both drivers consented and underwent roadside testing. Police found that neither were impaired. Toxicology tests were ordered on the pedestrian.
