MEDFORD, Ore. -- Girl Scouts around the world are celebrating 101 years of empowering young women.
To kick off the celebration, troops everywhere finished their annual cookie sales on March 10.
"Cookie sales were up this year. We sold 92,000 boxes of cookies in the valley this year," said Eden Greager, a Medford Girl Scout.
Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington serves 19, 291 girls with the help of 11, 600 adults.
Nationwide, there are 3.2 million Girl Scouts and 2.3 million girl members and 890,000 adult members working primarily as volunteers.
Some fun facts about Girl Scouts:
- 14 of 20 women, 70 percent, in the United States Senate are former Girl Scouts.
- 45 of 81 women (55 percent) in the House of Representatives are former Girl Scouts.
- 53 percent of all women business owners are former Girl Scouts.
- 76 percent of all Girl Scout alumnae report that Girl Scouts had a positive impact in their lives.
March 11-15 is National Girl Scout week, celebrating the rich history all over the world.
