SOU Track & Field Returns to Seattle for Husky Classic
ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon track and field teams head back to Seattle this weekend for the final indoor meet of the regular season, with the Raiders set to participate in the Husky Classic on Friday and Saturday at the UW Dempsey Indoor.
After the trip two weeks ago was hindered by a flu bug, the Raiders will again compete in a limited number of events with the hope of qualifying for the national championship meet in three weeks.
“We're excited to head up there,” SOU head coach Grier Gatlin said. “It's a really high quality meet. Probably 90 percent are NCAA Division I athletes, so it's just an honor to be able to get into the meet and compete against those teams. It will certainly get us started as we make our push towards starting the outdoor season on March 9.”
Southern Oregon will send two relay teams to compete along with three individuals. The distance medley relay team of Zach Boyd-Helm (West Linn, Ore./West Linn), Jonz Olander (Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass), Kevin Jorgensen (Yreka, Calif./Yreka) and Eric Avila (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista) will compete Friday night, and Gatlin has high expectations for the group.
“I think we have a pretty good shot to qualify for nationals,” Gatlin said. “We have a very good team.”
With illness scratching the 4x400 relay team at the last meet, the team looks to have a strong debut performance on Saturday. Runners in the event will be Nick Perrino (Reno, Nev./McQueen), Sullivan Stevens (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs), Josh Muswieck (Medford, Ore./Cascade Christian) and Olander.
Sam Hartinger (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) will again participate in the high jump and triple jump, looking to improve on his marks from two weeks ago and possibly earn a spot at the national meet. Returning All-American Stevens will run in the 60-meter hurdles and Mikayla Garrard (Klamath Falls, Ore./Mazama) will make her 2013 indoor debut in the 400.
“We're excited and hopefully we'll have some good marks after this meet,” Gatlin said.
