Southern Oregon finished in the top 30 for the second consecutive year and the third time since the rankings began in 1995. Southern Oregon placed 29th last year, and the department posted its best finish when it ranked 22nd in 2001-02.
The Raiders tallied 149 points in the fall. Coming off a national championship in 2010, the men's cross country team placed third at the 2011 championship meet to pick up 85 points. The volleyball team's ninth-place finish was the best in program history, earning 64 points in the Directors' Cup rankings. The department garnered a total of 130 points during the winter season, with 90 points coming from the wrestling team's second-place finish at the 2012 NAIA Championships. The men's indoor track and field team added 40 points thanks to a pair of All-American performances.
Southern Oregon ranked third among Cascade Collegiate Conference programs in the rankings, behind Concordia (10th, 594.25 points) and College of Idaho (18th, 498). Eastern Oregon finished one spot behind SOU (277.25) to give the conference four programs in the top 30.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 12 sports - six women's and six men's.
