Mike Riley, former Oregon State head coach, will return to coach Oregon State University football as an assistant coach, as announced Thursday by first-year head football coach Jonathan Smith.

Riley returns to OSU for the third time. As head coach, he led the team to 93 victories and eight bowl games in stints from 1997-98 and 2003-14.

In 2014, he left OSU to be the head coach at Nebraska. He was fired last month.
