Two games into his collegiate career, Southern Oregon University's Tre Holmes was recognized Monday for the week's top defensive performance in the Frontier Conference in Saturday's 41-25 win at The College of Idaho.
Holmes, a 6-foot, 265-pound defensive tackle from North Medford High, was credited with 2 sacks against the Yotes - the most for an SOU freshman since Heston Altenbach had three in a game during the 2011 season, and the most for any Raider since Holmes' interior teammate, Sam Woods, had three in 2015.
On C of I's first drive of the game, Holmes recovered a fumble that was forced by Tyson Cooper. On the Yotes' second drive, a Holmes sack shook the ball out of the hands of quarterback Darius-James Peterson.
The pressure put on by Holmes and the rest of the Raider defense, which totaled seven sacks in all, kept Peterson in check with 72 net rushing yards. In C of I's win last year against SOU, he had 228.
Holmes, whose brother Tristen is an all-conference point guard for the SOU men's basketball team, has started SOU's first two games as a true freshman. He and the Raiders will take their 2-0 record to Montana Western (1-2) this Saturday.
