Challengers Win 3rd Football Title; 28-21 over Santiam
COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. —
After posting a roll-over 47-0 win earlier this season, Santiam Christian used three second half turnovers to create a chaotic finish at Cottage Grove High School on Saturday night.
Leading 21-7 at the half, Cascade Christian got the final stop with seconds to go in the 4th quarter, thus allowing the Challengers to exhale and crown themselves champions for the third time in school history.
Caleb Jordan paced the Challengers offense with two touchdown runs which included the first and last scores of the game.
Haiden Schaan went 23-29 with a 44-yard touchdown pass to Ben Dunn in the first quarter.
Santiam scored eleven points in the third quarter off of two interceptions and a fumble from the Challengers.
Cascade pieced together a 13 play-80 yard drive which chewed up more than five minutes of clock late in the fourth quarter. Jordan punched in a four-yard touchdown to give CCHS the 28-21 lead.
Santiam's Grant Carley threw an un-timely interception with 1:28 remaining but the Challengers gave it back with a punt allowing Carley to get to work from his own 20 yard line.
Carley gained a first down after a penalty and followed with a 41-yard connection to Ivan Gilder.
His final pass came with roughly ten seconds to go. The ball was deflected by Cristian Flores-Alatorre and found the hands of Josiah Sills.
Senior leader Flores-Alatorre had ten total tackles to lead the Challengers. Kiegan Schaan also had nine total tackles including three for a loss of yards.
The Challengers have now won three 3A state titles in four appearances with wins in 2006, 2013 and 2017.
