One of South Medford High School's most decorated football players is back on the sidelines for the Panthers.

Matt Retzlaff helping out the Junior Varsity program this year as an assistant coach.

Retzlaff has grown up around Medford football, as it's practically in his blood.

"Jack (Singler) is one of my best friends," Retzlaff said. "His dad (Bill) was the head football coach at South so him and I were always the ball boys, water boys growing up. We grew up in it and it was something special.”

Retzlaff would go from watching the annual 'Black and Blue' bowl games between North and South Medford each fall, to play in them during his high school years.

"That was during the point when South Medford had a good run on em' for a good six, maybe seven years," Retzlaff said. "It’s just fun to compete with those guys on the other side of the town.”

Entering the 2017 meeting between North and South on September 29, North Medford owns the 17-14 all-time record.

Retzlaff was on the sidelines on Thursday for the JV meeting between the two, as a coach.

“It's definitely different," Retzlaff said regarding his new role. "It’s different seeing that side of the football but I’m just excited to see the kids compete, see the kids play to their best potential, and I just want to see those kids have fun.”

To top things off, the South Medford Panthers would win the JV game 41-7. Retzlaff has not only played football in Medford's historic stadium, but coached in it.

“My mom's dad is Fred Speigelberg," Retzlaff said. "I don’t know if she’s ever thought that one of her family members would ever coach in this stadium again, so I’m just thankful and blessed for this opportunity to play in his stadium and I’m going to take every moment and every second and take advantage of every opportunity.”

North Medford and South Medford meet in the 32nd 'Black and Blue Bowl' at 7 PM, Friday 9/29 at Spiegelberg Stadium in Medford.
