Opinion: Pelosi will not stop President Trump from speaking to the American people
Over the past century, the president’s State of the Union Address has been delivered once a year in front of both chambers of Congress and, most importantly, the American people.
The address actually fulfills a requirement that’s in the Constitution—for the president to outline priorities and report on.... the current state of our union.
However, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has asked the president to delay this year’s address, supposedly due to the government shutdown that has hung over Washington D.C.
Pelosi, clearly using the address as an opportunity to falsely put the blame on the president, cited security concerns and the fact that the Secret Service, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, has not been fully funded during the shutdown. Pelosi tried to use our brave men and women of law enforcement as pawns in her political games.
DHS quickly responded that the Secret Service is prepared and ready to provide full security for the speech.
This hollow effort by Pelosi to stop the president from talking to the American people exposes the problem that is at the heart of this government shutdown: Democrats do not want to reopen the government or to secure or borders. They are instead focused on undermining the president at every turn.
Here’s the bottom line: Instead of playing games with a constitutional requirement, Democrats should concentrate on securing our borders and reopening the government.
Let’s be clear – you better believe that President Trump will find a venue to speak to Americans even if Pelosi and her Democrat colleagues will not let him do it from Congress.
