Wildfires: Friday Update
MEDFORD, Ore. —
As of this morning, the Delta Fire is 97% contained. Full containment is expected by October 5th, according to the US National Forest and Shasta-Trinity. The northern California fire has burned 62,059 acres.
On Thursday, a large spot fire cast embers outside of the northeast corner of the Delta Fire, creating a 5-acre fire that firefighters were able to quickly cut a fire line around and prevent it from spreading. With the increase in uncontained fire perimeter because of the spot fire in Bear Gulch, the containment is 1% lower than the statistic that was reported on Wednesday.
Hot and dry conditions continue today, with gusty south winds developing. A cold front should start to move into the area tonight and into Saturday morning, bringing cooler temperatures for the weekend. The incident meteorologist is calling for an 80% chance of rain, according to the US Forest Service.
Suppression and repair efforts continue.
Klondike & Taylor Creek Fire
The Klondike Fire is 163,724 acres, at 72% containment. The Taylor Creek Fire is 52,839 acres, at 95% containment.
The Klondike Fire grew about 4,300 acres Thursday, under a heavy blanket of smoke caused by the inversion. It spread mostly uphill to the northeast. The fire did not threaten containment lines and it was not necessary to close roads or initiate aggressive fire suppression actions.
Firefighters have been able to balance monitoring the fire's slow spread toward prepared containment lines with holding and slowing the fire more directly in its current location. A new containment line closer to the fire is being completed and improved to reduce potential spread near Indigo Creek and the Illinois River.
Figures on the size and containment have not been updated by officials since Monday, September 24th: 54,334 acres and 82% contained.
Full containment is still projected for October 15th. Firefighters continue to patrol and secure the Miles Fire perimeter. Danger tree removal will continue throughout the fire's perimeter to ensure once these areas are open to the general public, it will be safe to re-enter.
Today will be sunny, with calm winds. Friday night will be partly cloudy. Chance of rain is approximately 50%.
