Father from Spokane Amber Alert found dead in home after standoff
SPOKANE, Wash. - An Amber Alert for a 5-year-old boy who was abducted by his father near Spokane was canceled Tuesday afternoon after the father and son were found holed up in a rural Whitman County home.
A police standoff ensued for hours at the home in St. John, and ended when it was discovered the father had killed himself, according to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office.
A SWAT team and police negotiators were able to secure the boy's release during the standoff. He is safe and unhurt, deputies said.
Police officials say the father, identified as Justin P. Robertson, 41, broke into the Spokane home of his estranged wife on Tuesday morning, stabbed her and then snatched their 5-year-old son. The father then took off with the boy in an unknown direction, triggering the Amber Alert.
"After 6:00 p.m., SWAT Team members entered the residence and began a slow and methodical search of the residence. Despite their continued efforts to end this very volatile and dangerous situation peacefully, without anyone being injured, they located Justin deceased inside from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," the sheriff's department posted on Facebook.
Robertson's estranged wife was seriously injured in the stabbing attack but is expected to survive.
