UPDATE (10:15 PM): Curry County Sheriff John Ward has confirmed that two people have died following a single engine two-seat plane crashed a mile north of the Brookings airport.

Around 4:15 p.m., Brookings Police alerted Curry County Sheriff's Office of multiple reports of a plane crash near the airport around Henderson Road.s

Deputies along with Search and Rescue, Brookings Fire, Cape Ferello Fire and Harbor Fire Department responded to the area.

Cal-Ore Life Flight had two helicopters searching the area. Around 4:45 p.m., a helicopter spotted the crash site and ground crews got to the scene.

"Ground crews were able to remove both subjects from the wreckage and were carried out of the area," Curry County Sheriff John Ward said.

Both deceased passengers are from Del Norte County, California.

NTSB and FAA investigators are making arrangements to travel to the scene to complete the investigation.

"At this point, the names of the two subjects are being withheld until the investigation is complete by the NTSB and FAA," Ward said.


First responders responded to a plane crash site near the Brookings Airport and Henderson Road around 4:15 on Thursday afternoon.

The Federal Aviation Administration tells News 10, a Vans RV8 crashed under 'unknown circumstances' roughly 1 mile north of Brookings.

Curry County Sheriff John Ward confirmed there were two people on board the aircraft.

The status of the occupants are unknown at this time.

According to the FAA, the aircraft sustained substantial damage.

The FAA and NTSB will conduct the investigation.
