Beach fire takes hours to extinguish

Beach fire takes hours to extinguish (Fort Dick Fire Department).

Firefighters worked for nearly two hours to fully extinguish a fire on the beach a few miles south of the Oregon/California border on Tuesday.

According to Fort Dick Fire Department, firefighters responded with Smith River Fire, Cal Fire and Pelican Bay Engine 49 just before 11 a.m. to a large fire on the beach near North Indian Road. The road extends from Hwy 101 towards the ocean near the Lucky 7 Casino.

"The fire was in heavy driftwood and took nearly two hours to fully extinguish.," Fort Dick Fire Department said in a social media posting. "The cause was likely an unattended campfire from the previous day."

The department is reminding the public to extinguish warming fires fully before leaving the beach.
