Governor Kate Brown has signed the Fair Workweek bill into law.

This is a first-in-the nation measure aimed at giving low-wage workers a break.

Alfredo Chavez is currently looking for a job and says this bill couldn't come at a better time.

"That would make everything a lot better, because I feel like we have to call-in to take a day off in two weeks in advance, then I feel like they have to call us in a week in advance and tell us to change our schedule," Chavez said.

Businesses in the retail, hospitality, and food service industries with more than 500 employees worldwide will be required to give a week's notice of any schedule changes.

Supporters say it will give workers more control over their lives.

The bill will take affect next year and then in 2020, the notice will be bumped up to two weeks.
