Police officers stop house fire from spreading

Officers from the Central Point Police Department were first on scene Thursday after a fire erupted in a home along Pine Road in just off the Interstate 5.

Crews from Medford Fire - Rescue and Jackson County Fire District 3 arrived shortly after 1 p.m. with four engines to help suppress the fire. The call was placed by a fast food restaurant patron who noticed the smoke from across the street.

"The fire did extend from the stove up the wall a little way and started to get into the attic so it was really close to taking off but we managed to stop the fire before it got into the attic, " Fire District 3 Battalion Chief Jeff Bancroft said.

Bancroft said neither of the two tenants were home at the time of the fire. The majority of the damage to the property was contained to the kitchen and dining areas, where firefighters believe the fire originated.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No damage estimate was released.
