Community Center Grand Opening
Jacksonville, Ore. —
The grand opening for the Jacksonville Community Center is scheduled to take place Saturday evening, January 12th.
“It's the culmination of more than 20 years work by literally dozens of volunteers who’ve spent thousands of hours trying to make this project a reality,” David Doi Jacksonville Community Center Secretary said.
The city of Jacksonville allowed the organization lease the plot of land for the next 50 years at a rate of one dollar per year. The Jacksonville Community Center raised $720,000.00 for the cost of construction for the additional building, which include a large event room and a state-of-the-art kitchen with new stainless steel appliances ready to handle catering for any event taking place at the Jacksonville Community Center.
More than one hundred donors - which consisted of personal, organizational and institutional monetary donations - contributed to the project, some coming from out of state.
“We have about $20,000 more that we need to raise in order to pay all of our bills but so far we’re extremely happy about the money that we’ve raised,” Doi said. “Donors donated anywhere from $20.00 to $40,000.00. We have an incredible spread."
Almost every organization in Jacksonville contributed to the Community Center project, spanning from book clubs to rotary clubs, and even senior organizations that have been raising money for decades donated to the Community Center. “Our entire community has skin in the game, so to speak,” Doi said.
“A senior organization donated $153,000.00 for the construction of this. The way they did that is they have a thrift store here in town and they sold twenty-five cent items, one-dollar items, probably items that cost no more than $5.00 for 20 years to save money and they accumulated $153,000.00 and donated that towards the construction of this community center,” Doi said.
The Jacksonville Community Center Grand Opening will have light refreshments, a few speakers, and musical entertainment beginning from 4:00 p.m.
