Have veterans in your neighborhood? What you need to know before setting off fireworks

Fireworks triggering PTSD (KTVL/Sarina Sandoval)

JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. (KTVL) - Before you celebrate our country's birthday you may want to keep in mind, fireworks can trigger PTSD for some of our local veterans.

Chandra York with Rogue Valley Veterans Community Outreach says for veterans to be aware of the time when fireworks are going to set of.

This year, the dates are from June 23 to July 6.

York says another tip for veterans is to go somewhere quiet.

"Look around at all the beautiful nature we have in Oregon. We live in a beautiful place, lots of parks nearby, lot's of land and forest where there's not really fireworks allowed to be set off," York said.

She says talking to your neighbor before lighting fireworks can also prevent triggering PTSD.

York says if you're a veteran and feel scared or get triggered and need someone to talk to, you can call the veteran crisis line at 1-800-273-8255.
