UPDATE: Eagle Point man died in officer-involved shooting at Eagle Point restaurant

9/20 Update: Authorities have identified the victim of Wednesday's officer involved shooting in Eagle Point. Matthew Thayer Graves, 33, of Eagle Point died after a physical confrontation with Eagle Point Police Officers. On Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at 8:42 p.m., an Eagle Point Police Officer contacted Graves near the Carl’s Jr. Restaurant in Eagle Point. The contact continued into the restroom of the restaurant where a struggle ensued.

A second Officer arrived to assist with taking Graves into custody. The Officers continued to struggle with Graves and shots were fired. Graves was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the officers involved sustained minor injuries.

Detectives with the Major Assault and Death Investigative Unit, which was comprised of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the Oregon State Police, the Medford Police Department, the Ashland Police Department, and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office, responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, September 21, 2018.

The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the completion of the investigation and a review by the Grand Jury. The names of the officers will not be released until that time.

9/19: Law enforcement confirms that they are investigating an officer involved shooting at a fast food restaurant in Eagle Point that has left one man dead.

It happened at 8:45 P.M. at the Carl's Jr restaurant in Eagle Point. Police shut down the intersection of Linn Road and Highway 62 during the investigation.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation into the shooting that involved an Eagle Point officer. The officer was injured during the encounter but did not need medical attention.

The man who was killed has not been identified by authorities. They said the officer used verbal commands, a less lethal option including a Taser before firing the fatal shot.

The incident was reported as an 'assault with a weapon' on police radio traffic. What lead up to the deadly encounter is unclear.

Eagle Point Police Department, Oregon State Police and Jackson County Sheriff's Office are on scene.
