Deadly assault in Fred Meyer parking lot

A fatal assault left a 26-year-old man dead in the parking lot of a Grants Pass Fred Meyer Thursday afternoon.

911 Dispatch received a call about a possible assault just after 12 p.m. today. When officers arrived at the Grants Pass Highway location, they found the victim unresponsive and determined him to be deceased.

The suspect was reported to have fled on foot from the area before police arrived.

Approximately 12 minutes after the initial 911 call, Grants Pass Department of Public Safety Officers were able to find the suspect - identified as Rolando Rivas Jr - based on witness descriptions of what he was wearing. He was arrested without further incident. Grants Pass Police have confirmed the victim was stabbed, however, limited information is available in regards to what events lead up to the assault.

Rivas was taken to the Josephine County Jail and lodged on a 1st Degree Murder charge.

Police report that both the victim and the suspect are residents of Washington state. Authorities are withholding the identity of the victim until family can be notified.

This case has been handed over to the Josephine County District Attorney's Office for prosecution.
