Hatchet assault victim dies; son charged with murder

[UPDATE 11:35 p.m.] Investigators with the Klamath County Major Crime team say Julie Hardt has been pronounced dead.

Friday June 1st, at around 10:30 p.m. Julie succumbed to her injuries.

Cheney Hardt is now being charged with Murder, Attempted Murder , Assault I and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.


[UPDATE 11:25 a.m.] According to a press release sent out by District Attorney Eve Costello, at about 4:18 p.m Thursday May 31st, law enforcement responded to an assault call at 10550 Wright Ave in Klamath Falls.

18 year-old Steen Hardt reported that his brother, 23 year-old Cheney Hardt attacked his mother with a hatchet.

Police say the assault happened inside the home. The father, 52 year-old Shawn Hardt tried to stop his son from attacking his wife, and suffered serious injuries from his son.

Steen Hardt grabbed a knife and stepped in, injuring his brother which stopped the altercation.

When law enforcement arrived, they arrested Cheney Hardt. Paramedics helped the family members who were injured.

Father, Shawn and mother Julie were taken to Sky Lakes Medical Center where they are being treated for life threatening injuries.

Cheney Hardt was treated for his injuries and taken to Klamath County Jail for attempted murder, assaults and unlawful use of a weapon.


Klamath County law enforcement are investigating a stabbing that happened Thursday night inside a gated community called Falcon Heights.

Law enforcement say they received reports of a woman who was hit in the back of the head with a hatchet. When police arrived to the scene, two other people had injuries.

They were all taken to a hospital and a suspect was arrested.

According to law enforcement, this incident looked like it was a family dispute that turned violent.

The District Attorney is planning on releasing more information later on Friday.
