A local veterinarian says canine influenza, or dog flu, is getting closer and closer to Southern Oregon.

A meeting was held Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at The Point Pub and Grill in Central Point. it is to educate veterinarians about the illness.

Cases of canine influenza have been popping up all over the country now.

Veterinarian, Dr. Glen Winters, says there are even reports in Corvallis.

Several dogs have been affected in California and Washington, so it's only a matter of time until it hits here.

That's why Dr. Winter says it's important veterinarians attend this meeting.

"It's crucial that we stay on top of the new diseases that are emerging. The old ones like parvo or easily dealt with now, most animals are vaccinated, it's rarely seen in most areas, but this new influenza is a brand new problem," said Dr. Winters.

This Continue Education Meeting will be given by vaccine companies to veterinarians about the drug and the effectiveness of the vaccine.

Several dogs have died because of the virus.

Dr. Winters says the best thing for pet owners to do, is get your dog vaccinated.
