Man fatally shoots ex-girlfriend, takes own life
Oregon State Police have released the names of the victim and the suspect, involved in last week's murder/suicide.
Police say the victim was 27-year-old Kristina L. Mehaffey from Josephine County. The suspect was 28-year-old Jerermy L Sweet from Josephine County.
Oregon State Police are investigating a murder/suicide of a Josephine County man killing his ex-girlfriend and then taking his own life.
On Wednesday night troopers responded to a domestic disturbance in Merlin around 11:00. When troopers arrived to the driveway, they found a female dead in a van. About a mile away from the scene a second vehicle was found. Police say the male driver was pronounced deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. After an investigation, it was determined that the male had confronted the female, killing her and then took his own life.
Oregon State Police's Sgt. Jeff Proulx says law enforcement have responded to the area before, but no previous calls stood out to investigators.
"I believe we've had a couple calls in that area, to that residence," Proulx said. "We haven't looked at all of them, so I'm still trying to determine exactly what type of calls we had, but nothing jumped out as of yet."
The female victim was found at the 600 block of Tina Way, while the male suspect was found nearby on Portland Avenue.
The names will be released later once the families have been notified.
