Petition aims to ban plastic bags state-wide

This April 22, 2016 image made available by NOAA shows a plastic ice bag found at the Enigma Seamount, during a deepwater exploration of the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument area in the Pacific Ocean near Guam and Saipan. Dives in the expedition ranged from 250 to 6,000 meters (820 feet to 3.7 miles) deep. (NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research via AP)

A petition that has already garnered thousands of signatures aims to ban plastic bags across Oregon.

Plastic bags have already been banned in Portland, Eugene, Corvallis and Ashland, due to their negative impacts on the environment.

A petition that will be sent to Sen. Jeff Merkley (D) already has more than 2,700 signatures -- more than halfway to the goal of 5,000 signatures.

The campaign was started by a Eugene couple, Lana and Ryan Cole.
