Police investigating officer-involved shooting along Rogue River Highway
Medford Police are investigating a fatality along the Rogue River Highway at exit 45A. The incident happened around 8:31 p.m. Thursday in Gold Hill.
At 8:46 p.m. the first Oregon State Police trooper arrived at the scene. The officers found a man, now identified as Tony Mills, age 73, underneath I-5 with a handgun.
At 8:59 p.m. shots were fired and Mills was immediately determined to be deceased.
No officers were injured. No other injuries are reported at this time, nor is there an active threat to the public, according to police.
The initial investigation revealed Mills fired his handgun during the incident, and one police officer also fired his weapon. According to officers this morning, they are diagramming the scene with a 3D scale diagram. The photos will be taken to scale.
The road was closed in both directions of Highway 99 this morning. According to Medford Police, the road was re-opened at 10:30 a.m.
Oregon State Police and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office are assisting with the investigation.
The case remains under investigation.
