Police: One person dead in I-5 crash near Cottage Grove
COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. – Oregon State Police says a Cottage Grove woman died in a crash on Interstate 5 near Cottage Grove Tuesday afternoon.
According to Cpt. Bill Fugate, the crash occurred shortly after 1 p.m. near milepost 171 when a 2002 Chrysler sedan stopped in the southbound slow lane for an unknown reason.
A southbound 2006 Freightliner box truck behind the vehicle could not stop in time and hit the sedan at interstate speed.
The collision pushed the passenger vehicle off the roadway and into the embankment.
The driver of the sedan, Janine B. Cook, 57, of Cottage Grove, was the only person in the vehicle. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The box truck driver, Nytasha Vatland, 26, of Roseburg, was not injured.
The crash reduced I-5 southbound to one lane for approximately two hours during the investigation.
