Portland Meadows closure; more Horse Racing in Grants Pass
With the recent closure announced at Portland Meadows, a commercial horse racing facility that has been operation since 1946, the Grants Pass Downs will see an increase in races coming in the Fall of 2019.
Southern Oregon Horse Racing Association (SOHRA) anticipates "business as usual" in the summer months of June and July with nine days of racing beginning on Father's Day weekend (June 15) and running through July 7.
In addition to the summer non-commercial races, the Oregon Racing Commission has made a three-year commitment to TMB Racing beginning in September of 2019.
14 days of commercial racing will take begin at Grants Pass downs beginning Sunday, Sept. 15 and ending on Oct. 28.
On March 27, TMB Racing had their license application approved by the Oregon Racing Commission. TMB is owned by Dutch Bros Chiefs Executive Travis Boersma. In addition to the fall commercial race schedule, TMB will have simulcasting rights.
"The only alternative and the best alternative was to have a commercial race meet at Grants Pass Down," Tag Wotherspoon, Director of Communication and Marketing for Grants Pass Downs, speaking on behalf of SOHRA said.
In the license application were some proposals to give the GP Downs facility a 'facelift' which haven't been finalized as of April 2.
Wotherspoon says SOHRA will hope to work alongside TMB Racing during the fall months as needed.
"We're going to have somewhere between 30 and 40 days of horse racing at Grants Pass down in 2020 and 2021," Wotherspoon said.
