The Rogue Valley Transportation Department is becoming a little more green.

They announced the roll out of six hybrid-electric vans used for paratransit residents.

While the electric component costs about $9,000 extra, the department says they will save money in the long run.

"On the other side of that coin is we're getting an environmental benefit from this vehicle," said Tim D'Alessandro, Operations Manager for RVTD. " That is outstanding if we're reducing our pollution output by 25 percent, and we're increasing our fuel economy by the same, It's a win win situation."

RVTD has a total of 27 paratransit vans. D'Alessandro said if new vans continue to be a success, the department could replace old vans with hybrid-electric versions.
