Sen. Merkley responds to U.S., North Korea negotiations
MEDFORD, Ore. —
The North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has threatened to pull out of the highly anticipated denuclearization summit next month.
Senator Jeff Merkley says he's optimistic the meeting will still take place but says it will only be a starting point for North Korea and US negotiations.
He says in order for there to be a more willing compromise the US may need to revisit some of its current tactics.
"We have conducted exercises specifically aimed at practicing the process of taking out the North Korean leadership. Obviously they're a little sensitive about that type of exercise continuing," said Senator Jeff Merkley.
North Korea blames these American and South Korean military exercises and comments made by national security adviser John Bolton.
